International Research Institute of Stavanger (IRIS) is the largest independent R&D organization in Norway and one of the leading petroleum research centers in the world. The company's head office is in Stavanger, Norway. IRIS activities are largely diversified, and researches in the oil and gas production comprise just one of the company areas.
There are also specialized divisions in the IRIS organisation: Akvamiljø (advanced environmental laboratory), Center for gases studies (methane, hydrogen, etc.), and Center for business, social sciences and political studies. IRIS group also includes about 20 affiliated technological companies.
IRIS petroleum center is working in close cooperation with oil and gas, research and service companies in such areas as wells drilling and completion, well control and enhanced oil recovery, risk management while drilling, reservoir simulation, geological modeling, water treatment, core analysis, well performance optimization. Unique equipment of the laboratories (core analysis, enhanced oil recovery, PVT, environmental) and Ullrigg comprehensive center for drilling process studies and equipment testing with seven pilot wells are key elements in IRIS research activities. IRIS is an effective research organization, which employs highly qualified specialists in physics, mathematics, IT, chemistry, geology, oil and gas production, and environment of offshore and coastal zones, social sciences and business development.
All the best practices are implemented in the IRIS software. One of such products is SWORD. It is designed for screening (rapid assay) the applicability of EOR methods and oil recovery factor. An assessment is based on the statistical analysis of a huge database of EOR implementations on various fields collected by IRIS worldwide. In addition, by using SWORD one can pre-estimate the development indicators (production level and its decline rates). An algorithm for evaluating an efficiency of cyclic water flooding is a separate module in SWORD.
It’s worth to especially emphasize SWORD’s high quality forecast - results obtained by this software are in close agreement with those of full-scale reservoir modeling in 3D simulations. And this is despite the fact that the SWORD needs to load hugely less of reservoir information. It’s enough to enter a reservoir depth, its thickness, reservoir and fluid properties to obtain recommendations on the application of one of four techniques: water flooding, gas injection, thermal or chemical methods. Hereafter it’s possible to add new parameters to the description and to more specifically analyze the reservoir performance under an application of each method.
